How to make the most of your Instagram bio

How to make the most of your Instagram bio

Instagram only offers you ONE precious link to share with potential customers and most businesses miss a beat by using it to send traffic to their home page.

If you want to make the most out of your Instagram profile you need to set up what is commonly called a “link in bio” application and start funnelling those clicks to more ideal locations or resources than just your home page, otherwise you may be missing a huge opportunity to send traffic through to specific stages of your sales funnel.

Example of how to use your Instagram bio to drive traffic

As a service-based business, I know people often want to read blogs like this to get free advice or guidance but might not be ready to become a client for a while (or ever!). I certainly don’t want them to book a call and waste my time if they aren’t ready to commit, but I am happy to nurture them through free downloads, my free Facebook group or other lead generation activities until they get to know me better or have grown their business to the point of using a digital marketing agency.

I use the link in my bio, and a free app called Sked Link to share directions to key content or contact points which allows me to direct people to the most appropriate content based on their current level of interest.

The bonus is that I can write Instagram content that refers to my latest blog post and direct people to my “link in bio” without having to update my bio every time I write a new blog post.. it’s always sitting there as a key piece of content I know people will head to.

Each of these links sends a potential client through to the area they are most interested in which means that instead of hitting my website and bouncing away or booking a call that wastes both of our time, they are more likely to find something that meets them where they are right now - and that is what understanding your customer’s journey is all about

Meet your customers where they are at right now

It’s really important to consider that only 3% of your potential customers are ready to buy right now - and a link in bio tool can help nurture the other 97%.

  • 17% of your potential customers know they have a problem and are gathering information on what they need to do to fix their problem.

  • 20% of your potential customers know they have a problem but aren't looking to solve it...yet

  • However, 60% of your potential customers don’t even know they have a problem that you can solve for them

So think about that 97% when you’re creating a link in bio and ensure that you are having an appropriate conversation for your potential customer particularly those who are further away from a buying decision right now.

How should you set up your Instagram bio for success?

If you’re an e-commerce business you should consider using a CTA (call to action) button that sends people through to your shop, and use your bio link instead to send people to your Facebook Page, your VIP FB Group or your latest collection or presale, or a link to your mailing list where they will receive a discount code for signing up.

If you’re a services business consider links to your landing pages, lead generation resources, free downloads - because chances are the people hitting your link don’t know you, so use this opportunity to woo them with cool stuff and obvious value.

Which Instagram bio link tool should I use?

To be honest they are all much of a muchness - the most popular free options are Link Tree or Link In Bio (and I personally use Sked Link). Premium options include some flash additional features like linked images available from Link in Profile
