How to create a simple digital strategy for your small business

how to create a simple digital marketing strategy

A digital marketing strategy can seem overwhelming to many small business owners, who are wearing all the hats in the meantime and might not have all the available cash flow to outsource their marketing to experts.

BUT A digital strategy doesn't have to be complex!

It simply needs to address the key digital marketing areas of your business - your website, your social media and your digital advertising.

Learn how to create a quick plan and identify your gaps and when you might need to tag in expert help

Some business owners want to know in more detail how to create a digital marketing strategy and others prefer a high-level plan that includes the most important factors:

  • your website

  • your social media channels

  • your digital advertising

Then it’s a case of identifying your gaps:

  • When was the last time you had an independent review of your User Experience (UX) or website platform? Shopify experts such as Renee from Running in Heels offer UX Audits for as little as $100 NZD + GST - that’s a low investment for a whole bunch of insight into how your website is working

  • Have you focused on your SEO? Before pouring cash money into paid ads it’s not a bad idea to try and figure out how your website performs organically. Googling your business or your key products isn’t a great way of doing this (as Google already knows that you WANT to see your own URL because you click on it all the time!) but you can run a free SEO report using tools like Neil’s Patel’s SEO Analyzer to get detailed instructions on your SEO errors and even how to fix them - or you can identify that this is where you would like expert help and book in an SEO spring clean

  • Are you on a platform that isn’t really working for you? When it comes to e-commerce I recommend Shopify over all other platforms sites like Weebly and Wix are ok for startups but to grow your business you need the right tools - and Shopify outperforms all other eCommerce platforms for small-medium business. You may need to make plans to migrate to a new platform in the next 12 months.

  • Do you know what kind of digital advertising you require for your product or service? If the answer is no you might want to book a quick chat with me to discuss your options

  • Have you researched your target market and do you know where they hang out online? Creating a couple of buyer personas is a great idea but you need to at least know the age, gender, income information and lifestyle of your target market… then you can pick your two social media channels and plan your content around those personas

Now it’s a case of figuring out if you need to tag in an outsourced expert

  • Do you need help with your social media planning? Then a digital marketing expert is probably your best bet. If you want someone to take the load off and do the actual posting for you then a virtual assistant is probably a more cost-effective solution. Just remember that you are likely to get what you pay for, and while consistent posts are a great thing, content without a plan is just more stuff and is unlikely to generate the attention and income you desire

  • Do you need help learning how to run Facebook Ads? Then you probably need a digital marketing course or if you’re serious about investing in your business then you’d get more consistent results by using a digital marketing coach.

Lastly, the part that most people skip is how to measure results - and there is plenty of data around to keep an eye on:

  • Facebook Insights & Analytics

  • Google Analytics

  • Shopify Analytics

  • Instagram Insights

If you need a hand figuring out how to measure your results then grab our easy to use template with key metrics already listed for you to complete each month.
